Aggie Gems is a women's leadership student organization on the campus of Texas A&M University. Aggie Gems is dedicated to instilling in its members an understanding of leadership, philanthropy, service, and sisterhood. I have been a member of Aggie Gems since 2015 and served as Sisterhood co-chair in 2016. My time as Sisterhood Chair was filled almost exclusively with event planning. I was solely responsible for planning and executing Sisterhood events for our members. This is where I learned to enjoy creativity. Being in charge of my own events allowed me to use creativity I had not been able to before. I thought about what I enjoyed and new ways to implement fun ideas into events. I also had to complete itemized budgets for each event as well which taught me to critically evaluate each element of an event.
Rooftop Yoga at Private Apartment Rooftop :
I organized a rooftop yoga class at night on top of an apartment building. The night was gorgeous and many of the attendees commented on how much they enjoyed the evening. The event was restricted due to a tight budget but this gave me valuable experience on how to plan an activity with limited funds for example negotiating with the venue and instructor gaining them both free of charge,
Pajama Party at The Private Movie Theatre at The Woodlands:
I also threw an end-of-finals Pajama Party where everyone could dress in PJ’s, enjoy a popcorn and candy bar and watch a movie. I organized all of the decorations and set up required. I also gained further experience with budgeting purchasing all refreshments and the movie itself to the limited funds available to the Aggie Gems. The event was thoroughly enjoyed by all and will now be ran annually to destress after the strenuous exam period.
